Stock Investments

If you invest your money within a stockmarket, the percentage profit you make on your money will have a correlation to the percentage rise of the market. Outlined below you can see a brief description of some of the major world markets and a graph of their recent performance.

 

FTSE 100 (UK)

The FTSE 100 is a share index of the UK’s highest earning companies that are listed on the London Stock Exchange. Since these 100 companies make up 81% of the market of the London Stock Exchange, it has an overwhelmingly strong impact on the British economy. How the British economy is performing is analyzed through the rise and falls in the FTSE.

Dow Jones (USA) 

The Dow Jones is an index that shows the large, publicly owned companies that have traded during a standard trading session in the US Stock Market. It was compiled to assess the performance of the industrial sector within the US economy. However, the performance of the Dow continues to be influenced by not only corporate and economic reports, but also by domestic and foreign political events such as war and terrorism, as well as by natural disasters that could potentially lead to economic harm.

Nikkei (Japan)

The Nikkei 225 represents the 225 largest companies in Japan, and is the largest index on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Since Japan has the second largest economy in the world, it is hugely influential on the world stage. It often can have different movements from those of the European and US stock markets, and so can be a highly profitable investment area.

Nasdaq (USA) 

The Nasdaq is an index of the largest technology based companies in the world. Since it represents 3700 companies and corporations, it is often considered the most important and influential index in the world.

DAX (Germany) 

This index is a representation of the 30 major German companies that are trading on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. Germany has the 5th largest economy in the world, making this index one of the most important in Europe.

Hang Seng (Hong Kong)

The Hang Seng is made up of the 45 largest companies in Hong Kong. These companies represent 61% of the total stock exchange. The Hang Seng has a strong influence on the Asian stock markets, and so needs to be analyzed to determine what is likely to happen in other Asian countries.

CAC (France)

The CAC represents the 40 largest companies on the French stock exchange; the Euronext Paris.  It is unique in that 45% of these holdings are actually owned by foreign investors, meaning you can’t just analyze the trends of the CAC through the French Economy, it has a much more global influence.

BM&F Bovespa (Brazil)

The Bovespa is the Brazilian index and is the 4th largest index in the continental Americas. It is growing rapidly and gradually having more and more of an impact on the world stage. Since Brazil is a large provider of raw materials, especially timber, its output will have a knock on effect upon the rest of the world.
